About this place
Few late-18th-century manor houses survive where famous writers and fabulists were born, lived and created their masterpieces. In the village of Donici stands the manor where the Moldovan writer Alexandru Donici (19.01.1806 – 21.01.1865), a classic of Romanian literature, was born and grew up.
Since 1976 the Donici family manor has housed a museum, with exhibits reflecting the life and work of the fabulist. The house stands in the middle of a small park, and next to it is the Donici family's little church.
As a young man, A. Donici began a military career at a military lyceum in Saint Petersburg; after graduating he returned to his homeland and began working, first in Chisinau, then in Iasi and Piatra Neamt. Alongside his legal practice, he also wrote a great deal. He was inspired by the fables of La Fontaine and I. A. Krylov. In 1840 and 1842 two books of “Fables” were published, containing both his own works and translations.
A. Donici had a special gift for noticing the flaws of human society and criticising them in his fables through the example of animals. Among his most popular fables are “Arvinte's Robe”, “The Fly at the Ploughing”, “The Crayfish, the Swan and the Pike” and others.
