Hello, I'm Your Moldova: Rediscovering the Country
1 min read

Borders, restaurants and swimming pools are still closed – you'd think this is the moment for domestic tourism to truly blossom (with all the precautions, of course). But alas: the government hasn't yet given permission for groups. So there's only one thing left – to set off and discover your homeland on your own (unless you're a die-hard homebody). And in this article we'll tell you how best to do it.
But is it safe? What about the coronavirus?

It's certainly safer than strolling in the park on a weekend or going to the store for groceries. Out in nature (unless it's Vadul lui Voda 🙂 ) hardly anyone will come closer to you than a couple dozen meters. The main thing is to follow a few simple rules:
- Travel by private transport. If you don't have your own car, you can rent one for the day from a company that takes disinfection seriously. If you're heading off for a few days – you can go in a motorhome: expensive, but comfortable.
- Bring food with you. If you forgot something, it's better to buy it at a gas station – there are fewer customers there than in a supermarket.
- Avoid very popular places. A trip to, say, Old Orhei might not be the best idea.
- We don't recommend traveling in a large group. Ideally, it should be the same people you live with.
OK, you've convinced me. But I don't know where to go!
No problem. There are several ways to brush up on your “theory”.
Virtual tours from Visit.md
Visit Moldova (/) – a collection of virtual tours made as panoramic photos, where, moving from one photo to the next, you can explore Moldova's sights and plan your future trip.
Also, every Wednesday the project team, together with Azbuka Travel broadcasts guided virtual tours, in which one of Moldova's best guides, Fyodor Evstigneev, talks about a particular sight and shows how to walk around it. You can follow new tours on the project's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/visit360md/, and the broadcast archive is available to those who support the project financially 🙂
Visit Moldova Community
In this Facebook group people traveling around Moldova post photos from their trips and share their impressions of new places. They are also happy to help and suggest to beginner travelers where to go.
Map of Moldovan sights by Yuri Shvets
Moldovan traveler and author of the blog On Foot Across Beautiful Moldova has put together a very detailed map of places worth visiting: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=14Rhczi3we26UE-Vqc3v6Fpa2lu6s2AaY.
“I made my own version of a map of Moldova's sights. The map is incomplete, because it really only shows the places where I've been personally and where I found this or that site worth visiting (that's why every point also has photos).
But since I've been to a great many places in our country (over 2,300 km on foot alone), the map can already be considered quite fit for use and for planning your own trips. Besides, it will keep growing – because I don't plan on stopping just yet.”
Teleportravel
It's an online guide with new routes through the most unexplored areas of Moldova, created by travelers just like you, to help you spend your free time in an unusual way.
Moreover, by creating routes for other travelers, you can earn money http://teleportravel.com/ru
Wow, so many interesting things! But what would you recommend?
If you're a “beginner”, you can safely start with places like Old Orhei, Tipova or Saharna. They are very well developed for tourism and it's impossible to get lost there. BUT! They can be crowded, which isn't great in our situation. So if distances don't scare you (about 3 hours one way), we'd recommend Fetesti, Varatic, Duruitoarea or Naslavcea – they're really worth it and at the same time see very few visitors.
And how can I go for a few days? The hotels aren't open, after all.
Here we can suggest two options:
- For the adventurous – go with a tent. If you don't have your own tent and gear, you can rent them from the X-Style store. By the way, the store gives a 10% discount to anyone who says “I'm going to Duruitoarea” or “I'm going to the toltry”. The discount is valid until August 31.
- For comfort lovers – rent a motorhome. Here this service is offered by Camper Moldova. You can read about what traveling around Moldova in a camper is like in this post on Facebook.
We hope you found this article useful.
Always yours, the team of Visit Moldova.
